Tactical Communications for the Correctional Professional
Instructor Program Description

This instructor program is specifically designed for correctional staff that uses examples for corrections, correctional content and correctional scenarios. Tactical Communication for the Correctional Professional is the correctional counterpart to the original Verbal Judo training program developed by Dr. George Thompson of the Verbal Judo Institute. In addition, this training program now uses Dr. Karen (Spencer) Stentz-Huebner’s Purposeful Teaching format that makes extensive use of duty videotapes and training scenario videos. This approach is more interactive, experiential, and learner-centered which utilizes scenario-based instruction to build on the experiences and strengths of the audience. The program will train participants to manage verbal abuse, develop effective initial contacts, generate voluntary compliance when dealing with verbal resistance, de-escalate physical confrontation through the use of effective verbal commands, and debrief the subject after the incident to prevent future incidents. This is a correctional training class developed by correctional professionals for correctional professionals. The emphasis of this training program will be to develop Ethical Interventions by staff with an oversight process for assisting each other in managing the inmate's, our own, and other staff member's emotions and conduct.

The basic program is designed to be taught in a three day format to allow for full development of the program including classroom, verbal skills development, and scenario based instruction.  The program may be taught in a one or two day format using a restricted curriculum.
