Dear School Owner,

My name is Chan Lee and I own a martial arts school in Milwaukee, WI with five locations and over 1500 students.Chan_Lee_x

I grew up in a dojang and am obsessed with improving my school so I've tried almost every school-development program in existence. I even spent 6 weeks as the celebrity coach for MADE (MTV program) to transform a Wisconsin teenager because I thought I'd learn something for my school.

But, with all that, I have a confession to make.

Up until 2009, my school's curriculum was focused on the physical side of self defense --- when it's clearly the verbal side (verbal abuse, bullying) that's often the most life harming.

I'm talking about those verbal shots that cut deeper, are remembered longer, and occur far more frequently than any form of physical attack.

One of my 9-year old students said it best: "I'd rather get punched than have someone say something bad about me -- because those words never go away."

To make things worse, when verbal attacks are not addressed, they frequently escalate -- leading to more emotional impact and, in many cases, physical harm.

Unlike my physical curriculum, which is the result of testing and refinement over thousands of years, my instruction on how to deal with a verbal attack had absolutely no justifiable basis. In fact, like many of you, I just made up a lot of what I taught!

Then I met Doc "Rhino" Thompson of the Verbal Judo Institute and realized that much of what I was teaching was just plain wrong.

Frankly, I was embarrassed by what I learned.

Here is what happened...

A good friend of mine who is a police trainer told me that I absolutely HAD to participate in a Verbal Judo Instructor program -- a five day intensive course in Tactical Communications for police, corrections and security professionals taught by Doc Thompson.

My first reaction was to just laugh. I am extremely busy with my schools and, like many martial arts instructors, I couldn't think of anything worse than sitting in a classroom for five days.

But then I learned more about Doc Thompson
and discovered he is the real deal!

In 1983, he took his 10 years as a university professor and 5 years as a police officer (yep, a cop with a Ph.D.) and founded the Verbal Judo Institute.

Since then, he has published five books, been interviewed scads of times by the national news media (including Tom Brokaw), and trained almost 1 million police, corrections and security professionals on the principles of Verbal Judo.

I was intrigued so, after a lot of arm-twisting by my friend, I decided to sign up

One of the best decisions of my life!

Verbal Judo is about redirecting people's behavior with words and, as I sat in class, I realized I had found the valid and proven anti-bullying system my school's curriculum was lacking.

I hated having such a huge void in my curriculum.

A large segment of my students joined my school to learn how to defend themselves from being harassed -- and it bothered me A LOT that I was only helping them with the physical side of self defense when the verbal side is just as, if not more, important.

Verbal Judo -- which focuses solely on he verbal side of self defense -- has been tested and refined over more than 26 years, on the street and in prisons - so I knew it would work for my adult students on the job and my young students on the playground.

But the program needed to be adapted for use in my school. So, I approached Doc Thompson with a proposal – partner up to develop a Verbal Judo program specifically for martial arts.

As martial arts instructors we understand how to teach our students good physical defense but we haven't had a proven program for teaching verbal defense. And, as doc_and_pamI've learned, verbal self defense is far, far more important.

Well, it turns out he had been thinking about doing this exact thing for a long time (Doc is a 2nd Dan in Judo and a 1st degree black belt in Taekwondo) – as had his partner, Pam Thompson, a long-time teacher of martial arts (4th degree black belt in Kenpo Karate – Parker System).

So, when the two of them heard my proposal, they jumped at the opportunity -- and my school and my life will never be the same.

Here is what happened next...

In conjunction with developing the Verbal Self Defense for Martial Arts program, I started teaching Verbal Judo to my own students -- and the response was truly unbelievable:

  • More parents started showing up for class and became more involved in our program (they wanted to learn Verbal Judo along with their kids -- but they also wanted to participate in the "car talk" component of the program)
  • My school's sign-up percentage increased ("verbal self defense" really strikes a cord with parents during first-intro sessions)
  • The enthusiastic "thank yous" I heard from parents were like nothing I had heard before (the stories I hear about my students using Verbal Judo in their daily lives are extremely rewarding).
But, here is the real kicker. Verbal Judo has become an incredible recruiting tool for new students.

Once word got around that my school was teaching Verbal Self Defense, I started getting requests to speak about bullying and how to deal with it. In one case, I was asked to speak at an evening session to the entire school district. Over 150 parents, kids and teachers showed up and, following my hour-long talk, the school sent the PowerPoint slides I used to everyone on their district-wide email list.

Then, two weeks later, over 30 parents came to my school to learn the practical aspects of verbal self defense -- and I signed up 5 new students.

As I said above -- UNBELIEBABLE! -- and I'm just getting started with using Verbal Judo as a student-recruiting tool.

Anyway, it took Doc, Pam and I 6 months to translate the 26 years of proven methods used by law enforcement for children and adolescents, but we now have a comprehensive program to teach other school owners what Doc taught me so they can add a verbal component to their self-defense curriculum.

The key here is that this program is not the made-up stuff that is often taught now. Instead, it consists of content that's been tested on the streets for over 26 years, taught to almost 1 million police, corrections and security officers, captured in five books and credentialed by a technical college known nationwide for its commitment to public safety (see below).

In other words, this program has enormous credibility with students and parents -- as well as with school administrators and others within the community.

Verbal Self Defense for Martial Arts

This comprehensive program consists of the following components:

  • Access to the credentialed online course at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College in Green Bay, WI.
  • 6 DVDs and a 115 page manual

Both of these components include the same material -- 14 modules with over 5 hours of video, Powerpoint slides that align with the video, class handouts, and more.

You can use either or both to learn the material. But, I strongly encourage you to take the online course so can you get the college certificate that you'll find to be a very powerful marketing tool.

Our Verbal Self Defense program is easy to learn and simple to teach.

You can go through the program at whatever pace you want. However, what we've found is that doing one module per week works really well. That way you can teach that lesson and really understand it (there's no better way to learn new material than to teach it) before progressing to the next module. Each lesson can be shared in just a few minutes at the end of a class.

Fifteen weeks later you'll have a firm understanding of Verbal Judo principles and you'll be ready to officially add a verbal component to your self-defense curriculum -- that's proven, tested, and unbelievably effective.

P.S. Doc, Pam and I are on a mission to radically change the self-defense curriculum in martial arts schools throughout the world.

For too long, martial arts schools have focused on the physical aspects of self-defense and largely ignored the verbal component. Or worse, they have done what I did -- present ideas on how to deal with verbal assault using made-up content that was mostly wrong.

The reality is that our students are much more likely to be exposed to verbal versus physical attacks -- and the verbal attacks are often more life-harming than any physical blow. That's why we put together the Verbal Self Defense program and why I strongly encourage you to get it and incorporate a proven, tested and unbelievably effective verbal component to your self defense curriculum. You are guaranteed to get accolades from your students, increased credibility for your school in your community, and real profits to your bottom line.
