For police, corrections and security professionals who have not been trained in Verbal Judo
Discover the Secrets of Voluntary Compliance -- Using Just Words
Dear Professional,
My name is Dr. George J. Thompson, Ph.D., sometimes known as "Doc Rhino." You may have heard of me or my work.
In 1983, I took my 10 years as a university professor and 5 years as a police officer (yep, a cop with a Ph.D.) and founded the Verbal Judo Institute, while continuing as a part-time officer.
Since then, I have trained over 700,000 police, corrections and security professionals (if you're one of them, be sure to check out Verbal Judo Members) and published five books on Tactical Communications ("Tac Com").
For over 26 years Verbal Judo has been taught by me and my global team of Master Trainers to thousands of organizations --- from the smallest police departments to the largest corporations --- with transformational results.
I've been interviewed scads of times by the national news media -- ABC, CBS, CNN, 48 Hours, Inside Edition, CNN and NBC (including Tom Brokaw) to name a few.
With all that, "Doc Rhino," "Verbal Judo," and/or "Tactical Communications" are probably familiar to you.
If so, that's great --- recognition is nice!.
But, by 2009, this recognition was a huge source of frustration.
Frustrated? You bet I was.
Why so? – because too many people wanted my training and couldn't get it.
See, prior to 2009, 99% of those trained in Verbal Judo attended a live event.
In other words, I was 100% dependent on planes, trains and automobiles to share my life's work with others and expand the number of Verbal Judo practitioners.
This didn't make any sense! Especially being 67 years old, a survivor of throat cancer, a hater of airport terminals and, most importantly, a father of a late-in-life son who needs my focused attention.
It was just crazy that I was spending so much time on the road.
Then, early in 2009, the lights went on.
One of my Master Trainers organized a full day session to educate me about digital media and Internet marketing – and a month later this site was born (I may be old, but I'm not stupid!).
Now, my in-person training is much less frequent --- but I'm reaching a much larger audience.
This Internet deal is a beautiful thing.
Here is how this works:
You give me your name and email and I'll send you a video, audio or written newsletter every week or two with a Verbal Judo lesson.
For me, this is actually quite amazing!
People subscribe and then 'automagically' get an email with a link to my lesson --- all for FREE!
When you sign up, here are just some of the things you'll learn:
The most dangerous weapon all human beings possess (knowing what this is can save your life);
The four steps of active listening (understanding these four steps will change your life – from the boardroom to the bedroom);
The 25 phrases you must NEVER say (so you don't say something you'll live to regret);
The opposite of talking (it's not what you think it is);
How to recognize your weaknesses and the weakness in others -- and use both to your benefit;
How to READ ANYONE and then respond accordingly.
"Verbal Judo provides the foundation for any truly effective police, corrections and security professional communication program."
Bill Lewinski, founder and director of the Force Science Research Center at Minnesota State University"George Thompson's techniques are not some academic's pipe dream of communications skills. They are realistic and proven control tactics, born of the streets and tested where lives are on the line."
Chuck Remsberg, co-founder of Calibre Press and the Street Survival textbooks and seminar series"Police, corrections and security professionals without Verbal Judo skills are as deficient in their overall survival training as if they didn't know how to use their weapon appropriately."

"I am an enormous fan of Dr. George Thompson's Verbal Judo program. We know that frightened human beings are no longer rational. As fear-induced, anger-induced or hormonal-induced heart rate goes up, vasoconstriction sets in. As the blood drains from the face, the blood also drains from the forebrain, and the midbrain (the part of the brain that is the same as your dog) takes over. The reason why you can't have an argument or a rational discussion with a frightened or angry person is because there's nobody home! You're trying to argue with their 'dog' thru the mail slot.There are several ways to calm down a frightened person, but one of the most effective is to 'talk' them down. And Verbal Judo is a scientific, proven method to 'talk' someone down. Proven across the decades, getting the 'acid test' daily in police agencies world-wide, Verbal Judo is one of the most well demonstrated, effective, and useful tools that can go in any police officer's tool box."
Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, author, "On Combat" and "On Killing""You carry the unique and mighty burden of making life-altering, split-second decisions on a pretty regular basis. Verbal Judo provides information to hone your judgment skills to know what to say, how to say it and -- perhaps most importantly -- to know instantaneously when it's time to quit talking and take decisive action. It's all in a day's work for you to talk down, diffuse, rationalize, judge, rescue, disarm, guide and bring a measure of peace to situations that demand your very best. Verbal Judo is a beacon, because this program identifies and quantifies the components of a job done well.It's nothing short of a crash course in wisdom.
